Sibeko, Peter

The late Peter Sibeko ( born in 1940 ) was a mixed media artist who produced abstracted figures. His paintings embrace all aspects of life - people, animals, townships and big city life. He was one of eight children. At the age of 15 his artistic talent was already noted and a few established artists of that time have offered their assistance to further his skills. David Mbele, a well known artist, mentored Sibeko and introduced him to charcoal. Solomon Sekhaolelo coached him in oil painting. In the late 1980's he opened in Johannesburg his own studio, named Soweto Art Gallery, which became an exhibition outlet for many aspiring artists. Peter Sibeko's art was on display in various group art exhibitions in South Africa, Botswana, United Kingdom and America. His work can be found in many corporate and private collections, both in South Africa and abroad.
