About Berry, Abe

Abe Berry was born in Mpumalanga Province in 1911. He is mostly self trained and had a long and productive career. He is known mostly for what he did with the Johannesburg daily “The Star”. Eventually his work become known internationally and in the latter part of the 1950's, he was voted one of the best cartoonists in the world. He produced editorial cartoons and political strips for The Star, then South Africa's largest daily newspaper. He regularly lampooned the ruling National Party Government for their apartheid policies.
